PPF Full Front vs. Full Body: How Much Coverage Do You Need?
The Coverage Decision
PPF coverage ranges from a basic partial hood kit to full-body wraps. The right choice depends on your vehicle value, how you drive, where you park, and your budget. There’s no single right answer — but there are clear guidelines.
Coverage Levels Explained
Partial Front (Entry Level)
Covers: Front bumper, partial hood (18-24” from leading edge), mirror caps
This covers the highest-impact areas — the surfaces that face oncoming debris directly. For vehicles primarily driven in city traffic with occasional highway use, this level catches 60-70% of potential rock chip damage.
Best for: Budget-conscious protection, city driving, secondary vehicles
Full Front (Most Popular)
Covers: Full hood, full front bumper, front fenders, mirror caps, headlights
Full front coverage protects everything from the A-pillars forward. This is our most popular option because it covers all surfaces directly exposed to highway debris at speed.
Best for: Daily highway commuters, vehicles driven on I-45, Highway 249, or the Grand Parkway
Full Front + High-Impact Zones
Covers: Full front kit plus rocker panels, door edges, door cups, rear bumper loading area, A-pillars
This adds protection to areas that get damaged from parking lot incidents, self-inflicted scratches, and road spray from your own tires. It’s a significant step up in total protection without the cost of full body coverage.
Best for: Vehicle owners who want comprehensive protection without full-body cost
Full Body
Covers: Every painted surface on the vehicle
Maximum protection. No painted surface is exposed. This preserves the vehicle in essentially new condition regardless of what it encounters.
Best for: High-value vehicles, leased vehicles (avoiding end-of-lease charges), vehicles being kept long-term, show vehicles
Decision Factors
Your Highway Exposure
If you commute on I-45, Highway 249, US-290, or the Grand Parkway, your front end is under constant bombardment. Full front protection is the minimum recommended level for regular highway commuters.
Where You Park
Indoor parking? Partial front might suffice for the front-end risk. Outdoor parking in lots? Consider door edge and rocker panel protection. Parking under trees? Door cups and rear bumper protection become more valuable.
Vehicle Value and Color
Dark-colored vehicles show rock chips more prominently. Higher-value vehicles cost more to repaint. The higher the stakes, the more coverage makes sense.
How Long You’re Keeping It
If you plan to trade in within 2-3 years, full front protection preserves resale value effectively. If you’re keeping the vehicle for 5-10+ years, full body coverage pays for itself by avoiding compounding damage over time.
Your Budget
PPF is priced per panel, so you can scale coverage to fit your budget. Starting with full front and adding panels later is a viable strategy — just know that the labor for installation is panel-by-panel, so adding incrementally costs more in total labor than doing it all at once.
Real-World Cost Comparison
To put coverage levels in perspective with the cost of unprotected damage:
- Single rock chip repair: $200-500
- Hood respray: $800-2,000
- Full front-end respray: $3,000-6,000
- Full vehicle repaint: $5,000-15,000+
Three rock chips on an unprotected hood can exceed the cost of a full front PPF installation. For most vehicles, full front coverage pays for itself within the first year of highway driving.
Our Recommendation for Houston Area Drivers
For the typical EuroLuxe client driving in the Tomball/North Houston area:
- Minimum: Full front kit — highway driving is too prevalent in this area to leave the front end unprotected
- Recommended: Full front + rocker panels + door edges — covers highway exposure and parking lot risks
- Premium: Full body — for high-value vehicles or vehicles being kept long-term
We always pair our PPF recommendations with ceramic coating over the entire vehicle (both filmed and unfilmed surfaces) for complete protection.
